How To Determine If a Vegetable Safe For Crested Geckos?

To determine if a vegetable is safe to be eaten by your crested gecko it needs to have a calcium to phosphorus ratio (Ca:P) of 2:1, 1:1, or 1:05.

To determine the calcium: phosphorus ratio divides the amount of calcium and phosphorus present in the vegetable by the calcium amount. The result is the Ca:P ratio.

Lettuce has 1.7mg calcium and 1.4mg phosphorus. Calculating the Ca:P ratio will give 1:0.82. This is close to the recommended 1:1 ratio.

This makes lettuce safe to be eaten by your crested gecko. Ca:P ratio is important because it can affect their growth, metabolism, and health.

If the gecko consumes calcium above what it needs, it is excreted in its urine.

If they consume too much phosphorus, they store it in their bones and teeth, which can lead to problems like kidney stones and metabolic bone disease.

If it doesn’t then it shouldn’t be fed at all. To further break it down:

  • Baby crested geckos shouldn’t be fed vegetables.
  • Adult and juvenile crested geckos can eat vegetables 1-2 times a week.

What Vegetables Should You Avoid Feeding To Your Crested Gecko?

Vegetables that you should avoid feeding your crested gecko are:

  • Cauliflower
  • Beets
  • Iceberg Lettuce
  • Wild Lettuce

First, Cauliflower and broccoli have high amounts of oxalic acid that prevents calcium and magnesium from being absorbed.
