CGD stands for Crested Gecko Diet, so yes, crested geckos can eat CGD. It is the diet that is specifically made keeping in mind the nutritional requirements of crested geckos in captivity.

However, since CGD seems to have worked for many other species of geckos too, it has now been renamed to be called Meal Replacement Powder or MRP.

There are many reputed brands of CGD available in many flavors.

The wide range of flavors and brands ensures that you are able to find the right match of nutrition and taste for your pet crested gecko.

Can Crested Geckos Eat CGD?

Yes, crested geckos can absolutely eat CGD. In fact, CGD, or crested gecko diets, were made specifically to meet the balance of nutrients required for the healthy functioning of a pet crested gecko.

What Goes Into Making CGD?

In order to understand how a crested gecko may benefit from a CGD, it may help to look into what goes into making crested gecko diets.

Crested geckos are insectivorous and frugivorous. In other words, your pet crested gecko will eat insects, fruits, seeds, and nuts.

Any reputed crested gecko diet will consist primarily of insects and fruit compounds – either in a paste form or in a powdered form.

These diets may either be ready to be consumed by your crested gecko or may require some preparation, depending on whether you use a pasty CGD or a powdered CGD.

The ingredients of the CGD are combined in a way that the required ratios of all nutrients are present in it, making it a completely balanced meal for your pet crested gecko.

Should You Feed CGD To Crested Geckos?

Yes, you should absolutely feed CGD of reputed brands to your crested gecko.

But before you understand why CGD is so important in your pet crested gecko’s diet, it may help to understand why other alternatives are not completely reliable.

Why You Should Not Replicate The Diet Of A Wild Crested Gecko?

A crested gecko in the wilderness will eat any insect it can hunt or any fruit or seed it can forage.

Most often, a wild crested gecko will feed on insects such as crickets, roaches, mealworms, etc., and it may forage different fruits and seeds, like berries, apples, or wild grains.

In desperate situations, a wild crested gecko may even resort to hunting and eating smaller lizards, and even smaller crested geckos!

But, why should you not recreate the natural diet of a wild crested gecko for your pet crested gecko? The answer to this lies in the nutritional value of the diet of a wild crested gecko.

The insects and fruits that a wild crested gecko consumes may or may not have the required balance of nutrients.

More importantly, this particular diet does not have the required ratio of Calcium to Phosphorus, which should be at least 2:1.

This is why a crested gecko in the wild is more likely to become malnourished and develop metabolic bone disease sooner or later in its lifetime.

And thus, despite it being the “natural” diet of a wild crested gecko, you should not keep your pet crested gecko on a diet of only live insects or random fruits.

Why DIY Diet Mixes May Not Work?

Even if you decide to not replicate the wild diet of a crested gecko, you may still end up giving your pet crested gecko a diet that is insufficient for its nutritional needs.

This happens when you make a DIY crested gecko diet mix by combining random insects and fruits and making a paste or powder out of it.

It is often easy for us to mess up the required ratios of nutrients in the diet mixes that we manually prepare at home.

That is why it is better to use a prepared mix that has the required balance of nutrients.

Why You Should Feed CGD To Your Pet Crested Gecko

Now that you have seen in the aforementioned sections how DIY diets and wild or “natural” diets may not work, you will be able to better appreciate why using CGD can be beneficial for the health of your pet crested gecko.

The major advantages of using CGD for your pet crested gecko are:

  • It ensures that the ratio of Calcium to Phosphorus is maintained at least at 2:1 – this will tremendously decrease the risk of your pet crested gecko developing metabolic bone disorder.
  • It is easy to prepare and does not take a lot of time.
  • It is much more hassle-free when compared to DIY mixes.

You should also include live insects in a regular but controlled manner to ensure that your crested gecko is enriched and its natural hunting behavior is encouraged.

But other than for enrichment purposes, you don’t really need live food for pet crested geckos.

So, CGD actually provides the complete nutritional value for the well-being of your pet crested gecko.

What Are The Different CGD Brands?

With a wide variety of CGD brands available in the market, it can get overwhelming for you to make the right choice.

However, here is a list of some of the most well-known brands of CGD that are trusted by many crested gecko owners:

Arcadia SFG

arcadia sfg

Arcadia StickyFootGold, or SFG in short, is one of the most well-known brands of CGD. It has a high content of proteins and is good for the overall health of your crested gecko.

While it consists mostly of insects, Arcadia SFG has fruit compounds added in the ratio of 65% insect to 15% fruit.

This enhances the taste of the CGD, especially if your crested gecko is more of a fruit lover than an insect lover.

Lugarti CGD

This is another brand of crested gecko diet that consists of insects and has a high content of proteins.

This brand is, however, more inclined toward fruit components. That is to say, the ratio of insects and fruits in this brand is 20% insects and 60% fruits.

What makes it so rich in proteins is the whey protein isolate that is added to it. So, if your crested gecko is not that fond of insects, then this fruity CGD can be your food of choice for your pet!

Pangea CGD

Pangea is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after crested gecko diet brands by many crested gecko pet owners.

It has variants that have insects and variants that absolutely do not have any insect content.

So, depending on your crested gecko’s preference, you can even opt for completely fruity variants and still ensure that your pet crested gecko gets its nutritional requirements met.

Repashy CGD

A close competitor for Pangea CGD is the brand Repashy. It too has both variants – with and without insects.

The variants with insects have about 10 to 20 percent insects and 50 percent fruit. The ones without insects have about 60 percent fruit.

There is a wide variety of flavors available, which will allow you to get creative with your food choices for your pet, and ensure that your pet crested gecko never gets bored of its diet.

How To Feed CGD To Crested Geckos

You will need to gather the following:

  • A food dish
  • A teaspoon
