A crested gecko’s main diet consists of insects, larvae, and fruits. However, that doesn’t mean crested geckos can eat all insects, larvae, and fruits.

Some insects are harmful when ingested by geckos and some fruits can cause death when eaten. Dragon fruit is a tropical fruit known for its vibrant red skin and sweet seed-speckled pulp.

It’s packed with a lot of minerals and nutrients. But, should you feed dragon fruit to your gecko? To be specific, can crested geckos eat dragon fruit in the first place?

Here’s everything you need to know about feeding dragon fruit to your crested gecko.

Can Crested Geckos Eat Dragon Fruit?

Yes, crested geckos can eat dragon fruit. They don’t have chemicals that could pose a problem when ingested by your pet.

But, too much and your crested gecko’s health might be affected.

Should You Feed Crested Geckos Dragon Fruit?

No, you shouldn’t feed crested geckos dragon fruit. But if you still plan to feed dragon fruit it should be served sparingly or as a treat.

We recommend mangoes, blueberries, blackberries, and kiwi as alternative fruits to dragon fruit. Because it has high oxalic acid and poor calcium to phosphorous ratio.

Can Baby and Juvenile Crested Geckos Eat Dragon Fruit?

Yes, baby and juvenile crested geckos can eat dragon fruit.

Dragon fruit doesn’t contain toxins or chemicals that can induce illness or cause death when eaten by crested geckos.

It’s a safe fruit that can be fed to geckos.

How To Feed Your Crested Gecko Dragon Fruit

There are two ways you can feed dragon fruit to your crested gecko.

Slice into small pieces

  1. Cut the dragon fruit into several pieces
  2. Use the knife to carve out the edible part of the dragon fruit leaving the exterior.
  3. Cut the edible part into small pieces. Preferably small enough to be easily swallowed by your gecko.
  4. You can also mix the small cut pieces with other insects or fruits to create an insect or fruit mix.

Blend to a paste or puree

  1. Cut and slice the dragon fruit.
  2. Carve out the edible part of the fruit leaving the exterior.
  3. Put the edible part into a blender.
  4. Turn on the blender and blend to a paste or puree
  5. Serve paste/puree on your gecko’s feeding dish.

This feeding method is the best for baby and juvenile crested geckos. Moreover, you can blend insects or fruits along with the dragon fruit for a more balanced diet.

How Many Times Should Dragon Fruit Be Fed To It?

Dragon fruit should be fed once every two weeks or sparingly because of the high level of oxalic acid. Any more and you risk your gecko not being able to absorb calcium.

How Many Dragon Fruit Can You Feed It?

A single dragon fruit is too much for a crested gecko. A quarter dragon fruit sliced into many pieces is enough.

How Calcium To Phosphorous Ratio Affects Your Crestie

Crested geckos should eat a diet that has a Ca:P ratio of 2:1, 1:1, or 1:0.5. The ratio you decide to feed your gecko can affect their growth, metabolism, and health.

If the gecko consumes calcium above what it needs, it is excreted in its urine.

If they consume too much phosphorus, they store it in their bones and teeth, which can lead to problems like kidney stones and metabolic bone disease.

How To Calculate Ca:P Ratio

You can figure this out by calculating the Ca:P ratio using the formula given below.

According to the nutritional content, the Ca:P ratio is 8.5mg:22.5mg. Dividing through by 8.5mg (calcium). The ratio becomes 1:2.6.

How Does Oxalic Acid Affect Your Pet?

Oxalic acid is not a nutrient or essential dietary component and it is not required for normal growth or health.

When oxalic acid is consumed, it binds to the calcium and magnesium in the body and prevents them from being absorbed.

This can lead to calcium deficiency which can be harmful to your pet. Crested geckos are strict insectivores and may not benefit from the oxalic acid in the food and may not be able to digest it.

Some people recommend soaking and rinsing the fruits to get rid of the oxalic acid. However, this is not proven to be effective.

What are the Oxalic Acid Levels In Dragon Fruit?

Dragon fruit is a high oxalic fruit that contains 97.1mg/100g of oxalic acid. The high levels of oxalic acid prevent you from serving dragon fruit often to your crested gecko.

Dragon fruit is considered a super fruit because of the large number of vitamins and minerals it contains.

However, the fruit has poor calcium to phosphorous ratio and high levels of oxalic acid. Although you crested geckos can eat dragon fruit it can only be served sparingly or as a treat.

Too much and your crested gecko might be negatively affected.
